Are you planning to create a garden in Ibiza and don't know which plants to choose? At ServiJuanito, with more than 20 years creating gardens throughout the island, we share our definitive guide to plants that best adapt to the Ibizan Mediterranean climate.
Why is it important to choose suitable plants for Ibiza?
Ibiza's Mediterranean climate, with its dry and hot summers and mild winters, requires specific plants that can withstand:
- High temperatures in summer (up to 35°C)
- Water scarcity in July and August
- Mediterranean winds loaded with salt
- Calcareous soils typical of the island
- Intense sun exposure for most of the year
Top 15 ideal plants for gardens in Ibiza

2. Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis)
Aromatic plant that grows perfectly throughout the island of Ibiza. It doesn't need frequent watering and can be used in cooking. Excellent for gardens in Ibiza city and Es Vedra area.

3. Olive trees (Olea europaea)
Centenary olive trees are emblematic in Ibiza. They provide shade and structure to the garden. Perfect for farms in San José and rural areas of the island.

6. Cacti and Succulents
Minimal irrigation species ideal for sustainable and low-maintenance gardens throughout Ibiza. Perfect for contemporary gardens and rockeries.

7. Hibiscus (Hibiscus rosa-sinensis)
Tropical flowers that add vibrant color to Ibizan gardens. Ideal for protected patios in Jesús and Santa Gertrudis.

8. Oleander (Nerium oleander)
Mediterranean shrub perfect for hedges in Ibiza. Very resistant and with abundant flowering. Common in hotel gardens and country houses.
Advantages: Very resistant, prolonged flowering, fast growth
9. Plumbago (Plumbago auriculata)
A shrub with sky-blue flowers that blooms from spring to autumn almost without a break. It copes well with heat and can be trained up a wall as a climber or left loose as an informal hedge. It needs some watering in summer and a hard prune at the end of winter.
Advantages: Very long flowering, unusual colour, easy to maintain
10. Star Jasmine (Trachelospermum jasminoides)
Evergreen climber with glossy leaves and very fragrant white flowers in late spring. It covers fences, pergolas and trellises, tolerates part shade and looks good all year round, which is unusual among climbers.
Advantages: Fragrance, evergreen, quick cover
11. Pittosporum (Pittosporum tobira)
The hedging shrub par excellence on the coast: dense, evergreen and very tolerant of salt and wind. Its spring flowers smell of orange blossom. It takes both formal clipping and free growth.
Advantages: Dense hedge, copes with the seafront, undemanding
12. Shrubby Germander (Teucrium fruticans)
Mediterranean shrub with silver leaves and pale lilac flowers. It withstands drought, wind and salt and clips easily into low hedges or balls. Its grey tone contrasts with the dark green of mastic or pittosporum.
Advantages: Very tough, silver foliage, takes clipping
13. Gaura (Gaura lindheimeri)
A perennial with fine stems and white or pink flowers that look like butterflies in motion. It flowers from May into autumn on very little water and lightens beds alongside aromatics and grasses.
Advantages: Long flowering, little water, moves with the wind
14. Agave attenuata
A succulent with large, spineless rosettes, widely used in contemporary gardens, beside pools and in big pots. It needs full sun and good drainage and does not tolerate frost, which is rarely an issue on Ibiza's coast.
Advantages: Spineless, sculptural form, minimal watering
15. Cotton Lavender (Santolina chamaecyparissus)
An aromatic shrublet with grey foliage and yellow button flowers in early summer. It forms compact cushions for borders and rockeries and does better neglected than fussed over: too much water makes it fall apart.
Advantages: Very little water, aromatic, compact
A word of warning about palms
The Canary Island date palm on this list is the species hit hardest by the red palm weevil. If you choose it, plan for regular preventive treatments from the first year; we explain them in red palm weevil treatment in Ibiza.
Combinations that work in Ibiza
Plants perform better in company than on their own. Three combinations by type of garden:
Villa with a pool
An olive as the central tree, drifts of lavender and gaura, Agave attenuata along the pool edge and star jasmine over the pergola. Few leaves fall into the water and there is flower from spring to autumn.
Front-line sea terrace
Pittosporum or oleander as a windbreak, shrubby germander and cotton lavender in large pots, and bougainvillea on the most sheltered railing. All of them tolerate salt spray.
Country finca inland
The existing olive and carob trees as structure, oleander or pittosporum hedges along the boundaries, rosemary, lavender and plumbago close to the house, and gravel instead of lawn on the paths.
Tips from our gardeners in Ibiza
At ServiJuanito we have observed that the plants that work best in gardens in Santa Eulalia, San Antonio and Ibiza city are those that:
- Tolerate well the north winds (Tramontana)
- Adapt to poor and calcareous soils
- Require little irrigation once established
- Resist the high temperatures of Ibizan summer
- Are resistant to the salinity of the coastal environment
Plants to avoid in Ibiza gardens
Some plants that we don't recommend for gardens in Ibiza due to their high water consumption or poor adaptation to the climate:
- English lawn (requires too much water)
- Hydrangeas (don't tolerate extreme heat)
- Cold climate plants like non-Mediterranean conifers
- Species that require acidic soils
Professional tip
The key to success in an Ibizan garden is planning. Before planting, study the orientation, prevailing wind and water availability in your specific area of Ibiza.

Frequently asked questions
How many plants do I need for a small Mediterranean garden?
Fewer than most people think. On a plot of 200-300 m², three or four species repeated in masses work better than fifteen different ones: the garden reads as more ordered, irrigation sectors cleanly and maintenance stops being a list of exceptions. Variety comes from habit and staggered flowering, not from the number of species.
When is the best time to plant in Ibiza?
October to March. Autumn planting gives the roots the whole winter and spring to establish before the first summer, which is the real test. A May planting reaches the following August with its root system half formed and needs twice the water to survive.
Do these plants cope near the sea?
It depends on the distance. On the front line, with constant salt, mastic, oleander, dwarf fan palm, bougainvillea and tamarisk work. Species like lavender or rosemary do perfectly well a few hundred metres inland but scorch in direct salt-laden breeze.
